Greece Never Dies, 2021-22
Glazed stoneware clay, wood. 72cm x 72cm x height 45cm.
The history of our country, turbulent and chaotic, takes the form of a Greek flag that is in constant deconstruction and reconstruction, and which, against all reason, refuses to become undone. This demystified, yet familiar symbol is also a humorous allusion to the Greek family: we can’t stand each other but can’t bear to be apart.
The initial small-scale ceramic model of the sculpture presented here was photographed in 20 different formations like a dismantled Kubrick cube. It won the 3rd prize in the competition organized by ATHENS VOICE and the Municipality of Athens entitled: 200 years since the Revolution of 1821. And then?
The model then participated in the group exhibition Greek Revolution, 200 years later, co-organized by the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation and ekfrasi-yianna grammatopoulou gallery. I was not finished so I continued to experiment with it by editing all the photos into a playful video loop puzzle.
The ultimate challenge though, for me, was to transform it into a full-size solid pedestal people can touch and sit upon.
