The Lotus Eaters revolve around the bare human condition. They have lost their eroticism and the faculty of emotion. Flung to the ground, spineless, inert, self-involved, they are distracted, addicted to someone or something that is not there. Their sexual organs function almost in absentia. They have forgotten what to do with each other, or have not yet learned it, as though they were the first humans on Earth.
Before starting to work on the Lotus Eaters I happened to join Twitter. I was swept away to the point of obsession. The users, with resourceful pseudonyms and fictional avatars mainly speak about themselves. The text is sparkling, sharp, sometimes vulgar, full of erotic fantasies and daring. They appear suddenly, disappear, reappear, they are self-debasing, flirtatious, belligerent. The smartest quotes are recycled by the others. You become familiar with their hours, you follow them, they follow you; you are not alone. Meanwhile, in real life, in bars, on the street, on the bus, alone or with others, everyone looks at their phone for virtual life is more exhilarating than any reality. This sense of disquiet towards the other represents for me today’s Lotus Eaters.
Οι λωτοφάγοι είναι άνθρωποι που έχουν χάσει τον ερωτισμό τους και την ικανότητα να συγκινούνται. Χυμένοι στο έδαφος, άνευροι, είναι εθισμένοι σε κάποιον ή κάτι που δεν είναι εκεί. Τα σεξουαλικά τους όργανα λειτουργούν σχεδόν ερήμην τους. Έχουν ξεχάσει τι να κάνουν ο ένας με τον άλλο, ή δεν το έχουν μάθει ακόμα, σαν τους πρώτους ανθρώπους πάνω στη Γη.
Πριν ξεκινήσω να δουλεύω τους λωτοφάγους έτυχε να γραφτώ στο Twitter. Για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα έφτασα στα όρια της μονομανίας. Οι χρήστες, με πρωτότυπα ψευδώνυμα και φανταστικά «άβαταρ» μιλούν κυρίως μόνοι τους. Ο λόγος είναι σπινθηροβόλος, πολλές φορές χυδαίος, γεμάτος τόλμη και ερωτικές φαντασιώσεις. Εμφανίζονται ξαφνικά, αυτοσαρκάζονται, εξαφανίζονται. Οι πιο έξυπνες ατάκες ανακυκλώνονται από τους άλλους. Μαθαίνεις τις ώρες τους, τους ακολουθείς, σε ακολουθούν, δεν είσαι πια μόνος/η.
Στην πραγματική ζωή, στα μπαρ, στο δρόμο, στο λεωφορείο, μόνοι ή με παρέα, όλοι κοιτούν το τηλέφωνο τους διότι η εικονική ζωή είναι πιο συναρπαστική από οποιαδήποτε πραγματικότητα. Αυτή η αμηχανία απέναντι στον άλλον είναι η σημερινή λωτοφαγία.
